St. Vincent de Paul Society, Portland Council – www.SVDPpdx.org
Executive Director Sharon Hills knew there were three kinds of visitors to her St. Vincent de Paul website: those looking for assistance, those looking to volunteer/make a donation, and corporate and governmental agencies wanting to learn more about her agency for a potential grant award and/or partnership. But first, visitors needed to be able to find the agency’s website.
Not only that, but the Executive Director wanted to tie the agencies Facebook and YouTube channels into their website and create a means to share fund raising events, articles, and agency news via social networking sites. What her agency needed was a redesigned website that included social media elements to further the reach of her target audience, search engine optimization to increase search visibility, and a web platform that allowed staff to create relevant content that visitors would want to share.
Objectives
The objective of the redesign was to:
- First page visibility in Google search results for agency services (food assistance Portland, mobile kitchen Portland, emergency food Portland, utility assistance Portland, rent assistance Portland)
- Include social media support for sharing content on social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, and others.
- Means to find agency Facebook Fan page and YouTube channel
- Easy to use platform where agency staff can maintain day to day content such as News, Events, Special Features, and a Blog
Target Market
Governmental entities (grant reviewers), local businesses (sponsorship), donors, customers and agencies looking for SVDP services.

Results
WWD launched an organic SEO campaign and achieved the Google search visibility goals for the keywords and phrases describing SVDP’s services (see SEO Success below). In addition, a local search campaign was created to gain local search visibility in Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Best of the Web, and Yelp.
Social media elements including follow me buttons for Facebook, YouTube, and RSS on the Home Page as well as share buttons for popular social networking sites are located at the end of each page and article post. Social media integration has broadened the reach of the agency both in terms of services provided and donor potential. Facebook in particular has been a great way to introduce the agency to the community and improve donor retention.
The website was designed using the WordPress content management system (CMS) making it easy for the communications director to manage News, Evens, and featured Articles. Website traAdministrator manuals The large donation buttons and quick page launch buttons have worked well in directing visitors to areas of interest.
